Log on as root and fiddle around with the KMIX switches. Make sure that the external amplifier is UNchecked.

As regular user, go into the KDE Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia ->Sound System. On the Hardware tab, select Open Sound System (OSS) as the audio device and restart KDE (CTRL-ALT-Backspace).

If your music and video applications keep giving bad sound, make sure that in their audio configuration OSS is used.

Mic is working for me right now, but the sound level in Skype is very low.

Skype uses OSS instead of ALSA. OSS is an emulator within ALSA. See this post: Mepis Lovers Forum Post
